Grand Rapids Candlelight Concert: Tribute to Vivaldi's Four Seasons

I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.
— Vincent Van Gogh

Series photographed for Fever’s Candlelight Concert Series featuring a tribute to Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons at The Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This project was set to be a challenge for me. I was photographing during a live performance, navigating in and around guests while maintaining the least obtrusive presence. Photographic gymnastics — a skill I have refined over the years.

Each genre of musical performance has its own traditions and conventions. I knew I had to be especially mindful of everything from the weight of my shoes hitting the floors to studying where the creaks in the wooden balcony were prior to the performance. As the church was built to carry sounds, this was important to keep in mind. During quiet moments, I planned my shots and waited to move among the darkness, lit only by the candlelights you see in the images.
